Formation
We believe that God calls us to follow Jesus. This call to discipleship leads us on a life-long journey that requires study and practice. The church exists to teach us how to live as disciples.
Spiritual growth occurs when we connect the Christian story to our personal story, so we look for those places where the two intersect. Here at Emmanuel, we believe that children, youth, and adults all deserve a quality program of spiritual formation that helps us to make this connection. To that end, we provide many opportunities for growth, including:
- Bible Study Groups
- Advent and Lenten Study Groups
- Christian Formation for Young People (formally known as Sunday School)
- Youth Group and Confirmation Class
- The Tuesday Sewing Group
- Worship Participants (lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, altar guild, acolytes)
- Special liturgical observances
- And much more . . .
Christian Formation Ministries
There is a life-long continuum of learning and growing in the Christian faith that begins at Baptism. Formation is accomplished in a number of ways, some formal, some informal.
Every fall, we begin an exciting new program of musical training for children using the Royal School of Church Music curriculum. There are two components: musical instruction and religious instruction with children attending one afternoon each week after school and participating in the 10:00 service on Sundays. Children benefit and grow in many ways, spiritual, social and intellectual when they engage in this work together. It is also a source of fun and the beginning of the development of life-long skills and interests. All children are welcome to join this program even if they are not currently attending Emmanuel Church. For more information about our RSCM Choristers program, please contact our Director of Music, Allen Hill at music@emmanuelnewport.org.
Christian Formation for Young People classes for yound people ages 4-18 are conducted on 3 Sunday mornings a month at 10 AM. Children join their families during at the Sign of the Peace. Our curriculum, Weaving God's Promises , introduces our young people to the Bible, the faith and the traditions of the Church at appropriate levels of their development and understanding.
CFFYP Registration Form
Children who are not yet old enough to participate in our CFFYP classes are welcome in the Emmanuel Nursery, Sundays from 9:30-11 AM.
There is an Adult Bible Study at Sundays at 9 AM to discuss the lessons that will be heard at the 10 AM service each week. Background, relevance and individual insight are elements of the discussions. All are welcome. Please see our calendar for additional seasonally themed bible studies.
