"Reggie and Fred" Sconces
When Dr. Frederick Hartmann and Mrs. Regina (Reggie) Hartmann arrived in Newport for War College duty, they were faithful members of Emmanuel Church. It was Reggie’s idea to transform the dark chapel by making bright kneelers at the communion rail and individual kneelers with a scripture verse as memorials for family members. Each kneeler cost $35; the person donating the kneelers chose the verse. It took eight years to complete the project. All spaces that could be made better were done. The guild then went on to buy the rug in the chapel. The rug lasted thirty years and only recently was replaced (3 years ago). Louise Ritchie is the keeper of these memories.
When the Hartmann’s left our church, they wanted no parting gift, so the parish bought brass sconces for the fireplace– named Reggie and Fred– as a reminder of their service. Nancy Allan
The brass sconces “ Reggie and Fred” are now once again hanging in their rightful home on either side of the fireplace in the Library.
