Music Notes and more: I hesitate to name folks for fear of leaving anyone out, but I can not thank everyone at Emmanuel enough for all your support, help and attendance last Sunday, when we hosted 41 choristers from around New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington D.C. along with their adult staff for the first ever, RSCM summer singing course held in Rhode Island. Your help and worshipping with us at Emmanuel to hear the fruits of their week rehearsing and singing, under the direction of Ben Hutto of St. Alban’s School in Washington, DC and Director of Music at St. John’s Lafayette Square, provided an overwhelming sense of a loving community for the choristers and was a major part of the culmination of their growth in Christian formation for the week. All of us may feel especially honored that God’s mission included hosting this festival service at Emmanuel. During the week the children learned good breathing & singing techniques, learned about liturgy & the Liturgical Year, and made new friends in faith singing daily Morning Prayer, Compline and two Evensongs, in addition to the Sunday worship in which we were privileged to participate. We even had music in the service written by two of the choristers themselves in the form of the hymn descant on Hymn 401, a real ‘World Premiere.’ The choristers individually grew in responsibility, self-esteem and leadership as maturing Christians, all major attributes for which their parents and peers can be very proud and they were so well-behaved, Salve Regina officials said they were the best group of children they had ever had on campus and immediately asked if RSCM would like to come back next year to which we responded with a hearty, YES! So, I am pleased to announce, (and mark your calendars); August 1st to August 7th 2011 for the Second RSCM course in Newport, next year.
As our continuing mission proceeds at Emmanuel and we come down from that ‘mountain-top’ experience of last Sunday August 8th, you are welcome to join us for Summer Choir during the remainder of August, Sundays at 8:45 to rehearse the music of the day from 8:45 to 9:45 A.M. before the 10 A.M. Eucharist. I invite anyone interested in doing a little singing to share your talents with us and all who worship at Emmanuel Church. I learned as much, if not more than the choristers about good breathing & singing techniques from our wonderful RSCM vocal coach, Jolle Greenleaf last week and I am eager to share with everyone the tips that will improve our singing in choir for our weekly corporate worship. This Sunday, Pentecost 12, we sing 366, Holy God, we praise they Name, 421, 574, 483, and 637. The Collect for the Day sums up our weekly worship:
Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Peace and see you at worship – AJH
The Chorister Creed & Prayer
‘I will sing with the spirit and with understanding also’
The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 14:15
Bless, O Lord, us your servants who minister in your temple;
Grant that what we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts,
And what we believe in our hearts we may show forth in our lives;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
