Music Notes: All are welcome to join us during the summer months at 8:45 to rehearse the music of the day from 8:45 to 9:45 A.M. Sunday’s before the Eucharist. Pentecost 7 presents the story of the Good Samaritan. This parable falls right in line with what we just sang last week in the words of Hymn 528, ‘Lord, you gave the great commission; “Heal the sick and preach the word,”’ (and I want to thank and commend everyone, especially the choir, for the rousing singing of the tune by the late Alec Wyton, a former Director of Music at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NYC). There are two other known tunes to which we could have sung Rowthorn’s text; however, Wyton’s tune contains a rising climatic crescendo to the word ‘Spirit’ as it moves higher and higher, as if climbing a hill and then, breathing a sigh of awe as one takes in the view from the top. Back to the gospel and more importantly toward its conclusion, Jesus asks, ‘Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." So, there again, is the immediate commission, ‘show mercy, and to do it, again and again.’ It is an endless commission that brings to mind what Anita said about meeting Mother Theresa – That in doing God’s work, he takes over and gives all who serve the strength (and faith), to do whatever it is they can do. So there we have it for the music, from the commencement and preparation of the service with, ‘Rise up, ye saints of God, to ‘Joyful, joyful, we adore thee,’ to the tunes of ‘Land of Rest,’ and ‘Hyfrydol,’ we sing of praise, acknowledgement, being available and most importantly, doing. Emmanuel Music & Arts Series: In the next two weeks, we have available to us two very different concerts, with a portion of the proceeds to support our RSCM Chorister Scholarship Fund: Jubilate Ringers, hand bell choir from St. Luke’s Church East Greenwich will be here, Saturday, July 17 at 7 P.M. to give us a soothing respite after a Field Day of cleaning and then, on Sunday, July 25th at 4 P.M. Ecclesia Consort, will sing all Six of the immortal motets composed by Johann Sebastian Bach on the last day of Newport Music Festival. These monumental choral works, dedicated to the late, Dr. Mark P. Malkovich, III, present scriptural sermons in polyphonic counterpoint by that servant of God, who signed all his compositions, ‘Soli Deo Gloria,’ - ‘to God alone be the glory.’ Like Mother Theresa, Bach worked tirelessly dictating music even as he was going blind and dying on his deathbed. These Motets are choral works worth hearing ‘live’ at least once before one dies and we have them right here at 42 Dearborn Street, July 25th. Don’t forget and don’t be shy, about inviting your friends and neighbors to these special program offerings and, to worship with you and us on Sundays, as well, in this beautiful space we call Emmanuel Church. Pierre Masse, the director of the Ecclesia Concert, asked if they could sing this concert at Emmanuel Church because of its space and acoustic and as I said many months ago, when I first arrived, the very word ‘Emmanuel’ means ‘God with us.’ God has a mission for His church in Newport and in just a few short months has brought people to within these walls for music that might not otherwise have come here. People do long for a connection with God and many are very spiritual without feeling the need to attend worship. But here at Emmanuel, there is an ambience of sacred space, created by Ralph Adams Cram via the inspiration of God, where all can truly sense, ‘God with us.’ May it continue be so in these musical offerings, on Sundays and in all our ministries in Newport.
Peace and see you at worship – AJH
The Chorister Creed & Prayer
‘I will sing with the spirit and with understanding also’
The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 14:15
Bless, O Lord, us your servants who minister in your temple;
Grant that what we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts,
And what we believe in our hearts we may show forth in our lives;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
