Music Notes: Our music for Pentecost 5 – focuses on the fruits of the Spirit, Anita talked about in her Announcements for June 27th; as each title suggests, Christ – the Church’s one foundation, love coming as the murmur of a dove, our acknowledgement of ‘love unknown,’ and finally, Christ is made the sure foundation, the corner stone. Hymn selection is always a fun, but challenging task because every Sunday has a plethora of choices, some well-known and some not so well-known. Oh that we could only sing 2 or 3 hymns at each place in worship to cover them all. Then, there is the decision of, ‘at which place to put them within the context of worship.’ 518 for example, we are singing as we depart; a bold, majesty melody called Westminster Abbey, which musically makes for a very uplifting recessional. Yet, its text surely speaks in Stanza 3 & 4, of asking to God come to us in the temple to hear the prayer of His faithful servants and to protect His servants within these walls. Yes, we are safe and comfortable here and having been fed with the ‘fruits of the Spirit,’ we can carry God’s gifts of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, out into the community of Newport and beyond and as the hymn so aptly states, ‘…and hereafter in thy glory evermore with thee to reign,’ as a people of God in the world. The photo above is from the opening Eucharist, Monday morning, of the Association of Anglican Musicians National Conference, held in Hartford, CT this week. The theme of the convention was Affirming the Human Spirit and for those who like to surf the web, the address is: http://aamhartford2010.org/. The sub-theme read as follows: ‘Our music is not just for musicians; not just for each other. No, our music is for the world. Our music clarifies the soul and our music affirms the human spirit,’ and that Monday morning the charge, (along with grateful thanks for service), was given to all the musicians present to be faithful servants in ministry for those for whom we all work, serve and teach within our individual communities as the body of Christ where we are. Needless to say, that spirit comes from God and with Christ Church Cathedral being filled with musicians, organists; choir directors and clergy the singing nearly blew the roof off the cathedral’s nave. Here at Emmanuel our Summer Choir schedule has commenced with the cessation of our usual weekday rehearsal for the season and anyone who would like to share their singing gifts on a Sunday this summer is welcomed to join us at 8:45 to rehearse the day’s music. As leaders of worship, we will vest throughout the summer unless the church becomes unbearably hot and stuffy and for that, we are making plans to place more fans in around the chancel and choir area for everyone’s comfort during the summer. WATCH FOR MORE SOON about RSCM – AUGUST 2 to AUGUST 8TH and please see fliers posted soon for Jubilate Ringers, July 17 and Ecclesia Consort singing Bach, July 25. We continually thank God for His freeing presence to worship in spirit and truth. Keeping our hearts in prayer for those in desperate situations, pray for good in all things; especially, the ministry of Canon White in Iraq which can be followed at: www.frrme.org. To support his work, we have copies of his book, The Vicar of Bagdad in the church office and Music office for $15.00. God’s work and real presence is in the world.
Peace and see you at worship – AJH
The Chorister Creed & Prayer
‘I will sing with the spirit and with understanding also’
The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 14:15
Bless, O Lord, us your servants who minister in your temple;
Grant that what we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts,
And what we believe in our hearts we may show forth in our lives;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
