Music Notes:  The Fifth Sunday in Lent presents us with the theme of ‘Mary of Bethany learning at the feet of Jesus, forgoing all other cares… at his feet, she is prophetic, giving an extravagant gift of expensive perfume and humble service, wiping Jesus’ feet with her hair, which foreshadows His death and burial in ways his other disciples haven’t come anywhere near.  It is a daring…unpopular gesture, but sometime we need to do things for God which might seem to be crazy,’ to quote the RSCM Journal.  With that in mind, the choir sings, ‘Purist and highest,’ at the anthem by Charles Villiers Stanford, pictured above, whose bio and career may be read at the following Internet links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Villiers_Stanford  http://www.classical.net/music/comp.lst/acc/stanford.php and at communion, ‘God so loved the world’  by Sir John Goss: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goss_%28composer%29.  SIR JOHN GOSS (1800-1880), English composer, was born at Fareham, Hampshire, on the 27th of December 1800. He was elected a chorister of the Chapel Royal in 1811, and in 1816, on the breaking of his voice, became a pupil of Attwood. He was appointed organist of St Luke's, Chelsea, in 1824, and in 1838 became organist of St Paul's in succession to Attwood; he kept the post until 1872, when he resigned and was knighted.  His position in the London musical world of the time was an influential one, and he did much by his teaching and criticism to encourage the study and appreciation of good music.  Though his few orchestral works have very small importance, his church music includes some fine compositions, such as the anthems "O taste and see," "O Saviour of the world" and God so loved the world, among other.  He was the last of the great English school of church composers who devoted themselves almost exclusively to church music.  He died at Brixton, London, on the 10th of May 1880.

We continue to work on the development of our chorister program having the excited anticipation of hosting the RSCM Newport Summer Course this August.  Ben Hutto of St. Albans at the National Cathedral, Washington D.C. will be the music director for the week.  This chorister work is important not just for singing, but Christian formation, as well and, ‘Getting things off the ground is by far the hardest part.  We have started and need the help of young singers with the very important support of their parents, to learn and exclaim songs of praise & worship in our liturgy each and every Sunday.  With God’s help we continue, week by week together meeting either Friday afternoons with the adults and/or Sundays after church from 11:30 to 12:30.

Closing prayer for Lent

Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth;
give me an undivided heart to revere your name.
(Psalm 86:11 NRSV)

Peace and see you at worship – AJH
