Music Notes: All are welcome to join us during the summer months, Sundays at 8:45 (July 18th 8:30) to rehearse the music of the day from 8:45 to 9:45 A.M. before the Eucharist. I thank our new singers, India, Sean, Steve, Laura and her daughter Lilly, for joining us this week and invite everyone interested in doing a little sing this summer to share their talents with us and all who worship at Emmanuel Church. This Sunday, Pentecost 8, we welcome the Bishop as Christ’s servant coming among us to visit and teach and it is of interest to me to reflect on what a parallel this visit is to today’s Gospel, which I print here due to its brief, but poignant message: ‘As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her." So here, we sing an Advent hymn: 48, O day of radiant gladness, to greet the day, our guests and worshippers alike to ‘…his Holy Scripture hear;’ and with the living presence greeted through Bread and Wine.’ It is here we need to drop our busy – ness… to rest, to hear, to sing aloud: Hymns, 487, (invitation), 296, (Baptism), 317, (banquet), 488, (vision), 314 (adoration) and 401, (might and majesty are Thine). As our anthem, the Emmanuel Choir and Choristers will sing, ‘The Invited,’ an anonymous poem set in four ingenious, inspired parts by composer Hubert Bird in the mid 1990’s. It is a subtle invitation to our Lord, creator of all, to come, ‘…to our table…, as guest and giver…, to dine,’ as so eloquently told us in the gospel. Please see more about the Gospel at: http://www.womeninthebible.net/2.3.Martha_and_Mary.htm. Emmanuel Music & Arts Series: This Saturday the 17th, join us in support our RSCM Chorister Scholarship Fund by attending the Jubilate Ringers, hand bell choir concert from St. Luke’s Church East Greenwich at 7 P.M. It will provide a soothing respite after the Field Day of cleaning and Sunday, July 25th at 4 P.M. Ecclesia Consort, will sing the six immortal motets of Johann Sebastian Bach. These monumental choral works, sung on the last day of Newport Music Festival will be dedicated to the late, Dr. Mark P. Malkovich, III, whose vision and love of music made Newport a center for the musical arts. Being great choral works worth hearing ‘live’ at least once in one’s life, we are privileged and honored to have Pierre Masse conduct the Ecclesia Consort right here in Emmanuel Church, July 25th. Invite your friends and neighbors to these special summer music programs and also, to worship with you and us on Sundays, as well, in this beautiful space we call Emmanuel Church. God has a mission for us, in which we have stated: ‘We are a dynamic faith community committed to sharing God's love. Our mission is to equip people to live as disciples of Jesus.’ Music refreshes the soul and brings people to Emmanuel for delights to the ear and mind that cannot be found anywhere else and people who long for a connection with God can receive very spiritual feeling here at Emmanuel, where the ambience of sacred space is truly the inspiration of God. Join us for these musical offerings and on Sundays, in all our ministries in Newport.
Peace and see you at worship – AJH
The Chorister Creed & Prayer
‘I will sing with the spirit and with understanding also’
The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 14:15
Bless, O Lord, us your servants who minister in your temple;
Grant that what we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts,
And what we believe in our hearts we may show forth in our lives;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
