Counter Tenor, Jonathan Hill visits Choristers
Former Christ Church Catherdral, (Hartford, CT), Chorister, now Counter Tenor, Jonathan Hill, visited our choristers' last rehearsal this past Friday June 10 to relate his singing and learning experiences growing up as a chorister and to do some vocal coaching. Jonathan is the son of our Director of Music, Allen Hill.
Having sung with the Cathedral Men & Boy choir for ten years from the time he was seven until seventeen (1990-2000), under Philip Issacson and James Barry, Jonathan told the choristers how the chorister experiance helped him grow in skill and confidence in all facets of life, as well in music and singing, (he confessed actually, he didn't think about or much like singing before he joined the Cathedral choir). He also talked about the Cathedral Choir touring the U.K. in 2000, singing at St. Andrew's Cathedral in Aberdeen, Scotland, Peterborough Cathedral, Peterborough and Southward Cathedral in London, all from where came the Tea Towel banners hanging on our choir room walls. (stop in to take a look!).
During his college years, Jonathan stdudied at the Berklee School of Music Boston and then, went on to study voice, early music & opera, at the Longy School in Cambridge, MA. He has formerly sung in the Trinity Choir, Trinity Church, Boston and in the choir of All Saints, Ashmont, Dorchester, MA. In September, he will sing with the Ecclesia Consort under the direction of Pierre Masse, when the Consort performs the immortal Mass in b minor by Johann Sebastien Bach in Providence.
On Friday, Jonathan coached our choristers on vowel sounds and relaxed, but well supported vocal procuction and at the conclusion of hearing their last sound of Sunday's anthem, commented on their improvement, 'Awesome!' We look forward to having Jonathan back in the fall.
