Outreach

“When was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” And Jesus will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Matthew 25: 35-40

We value our active outreach ministry. We believe that God calls us to bless others with that which God has blessed us. Our location in the heart of Newport offers ample opportunity to do so within our own community and beyond. Compassion for our neighbors is an Emmanuel tradition.

Newport may have a reputation as a wealthy and cosmopolitan resort city, but it also suffers from one of the highest poverty rates in Rhode Island.  We thus have a history of starting outreach programs to those in need.

You can help us continue this ministry by participating in one of the following Outreach Missions:

Soup’s On – 1st Tuesday of every month – 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm - Sign up to help feed the homeless and the hungry in Newport.

Neighborhood Breakfast – 1st Saturday of every month – 8:30 am to 9:30 am - Sign up to serve a free breakfast to the neighborhood.

Lucy’s Hearth – Make a donation of school supplies for a homeless shelter for women and children in Middletown.

Episcopal Charities Annual Fund Drive – Make a donation to support this funding agency for social programs within the Rhode Island Community.

Don Booth Community Outreach Week – April 17-24, 2010 – Thirteen people volunteered to work at the RI Food Bank, Save the Bay – Earth Day, Emmanuel Church Clean Up day and Martin Luther King Center Breakfast program.

Annual Crop Walk for Hunger – May 22, 2010 – Emmanuel Church raised $704.

Great Day of Service – Sign up to participate in the 5th annual event to be held on Monday, October 11, 2010. The day will provide an opportunity for people to come together to work side-by-side assisting local agencies and organizations in need of community work projects.

Martin Luther King Center – Feed a Friend Food Drive – November, 2010 - Collect non-perishable food items.

Soup’s On Coat Drive – December, 2010 – Collect winter coats, hats and scarves to be donated to the guests at Soup’s On.

April 16-23, 2011 Mission Trip – Emmanuel Church has sponsored four mission trips to the Gulf Coast to help with the rebuilding efforts since Hurricane Katrina. Our group will work for Habitat for Humanity, New Orleans (3 days) and Hands on New Orleans (2 days). Minimum age for a volunteer is 16 years old. Volunteers will be housed at Hands on New Orleans. The participation fee is $100/person and is due by September 15th, 2010. See photos from our most recent Mission Trip in the Photo Gallery.

Housing First- Attend community awareness meetings and learn how to support this approach that centers on providing homeless people with housing quickly and the providing services as needed.

Habitat for Humanity- Join in providing housing and building supplies, food for workers as well as assistance in building in the latest Habitat for Humanity right in our neighborhood!

Contact the office if you are interested in any of these areas of service.
