RSCM 2011 Director Ben Hutto

For 2011, we welcome back
BENJAMIN HUTTO
Benjamin Hutto is Director of Performing Arts at St. Albans School for Boys and the National Cathedral School for Girls in Washington, DC, where he directs Upper and Middle School choral ensembles, serves as school Organist, and oversees choral music, instrumental music, theater, and dance for the schools on The Close of Washington National Cathedral.
He has been active with the work of the Royal School of Church Music in North America for three decades, and is a Past President of the American Board. He has been guest music director for numerous RSCM choral festival weekends and summer residential courses for young persons and adults in the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Wales, and South Africa. In 1998, he was named a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music.
Mr. Hutto has presented children’s choir workshops and served on panels for regional and national conferences for numerous professional educational and music organizations. During his time in Washington, his school choirs and young singers have appeared on National Public Radio, with the Cathedral Choral Society and the Juilliard Orchestra, at performances in the Kennedy Center, and on national television. His Upper School Chorale and Madrigal Singers have toured from coast to coast in the United States and abroad, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, San Francisco, New Orleans, Australia, and South Africa.

A former Dean of both the Charleston (SC) and Charlotte (NC) Chapters of the American Guild of Organists, Mr. Hutto is also a past President of the Association of Anglican Musicians. When he served as Professional Concerns Chair for the AAM, he co-authored the booklet “Conflict and Closure: Professional Conduct in Adversity,” which has been adapted by both the Presbyterian and Lutheran Churches as a guide for conflict resolution in the church workplace.
Continuing his ties with church music in Washington, Mr. Hutto serves as Director of Music Ministry and Organist of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Lafayette Square, the “Church of the Presidents.”
A graduate of Emory University in English, Mr. Hutto did graduate study in journalism at the University of Missouri (Columbia), and music study at Westminster Choir College and the Royal School of Church Music in England. Prior to his appointment at St. Albans and National Cathedral Schools, he was Organist and Choirmaster at Christ Church, Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest Episcopal parish. A native of Charleston, SC, he was previously Director of Choral Activities and Instructor in English at Porter-Gaud School there, and Organist/Choirmaster at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, where he worked closely with the Spoleto Festival, USA.
