From the Registrar Regarding Cell Phones:
The whole experience of attending an RSCM course involves more than music and singing. As an adult, my understanding having attended the Kings College Course in Wilkes-Barre last summer is that it is a big responsibility for the proctors and counselors to oversee a large number of children/choristers and hence, once taking possession of the 'care-custody & control' of their charges for the week, cell phones and even visitors, (especially adults and that included parents) in the dorms, were strictly prohibited.
This all has to do with Safe-Church, keeping adult to chorister contact at a minimum except when singing together and keeping the choristers focused on their goals of good singing and learning. It was also meant to promote a main idea of having an away from home experience that enhances a chorister’s sense of personal growth, independence and leadership. The choristers quickly make many new friends from all over and merely by virtue of being there have much in common via their singing together. It is life expanding experience in a very spiritual, caring and safe environment.
Cell phones were allowed to be brought, but had to be given to the dorm proctor to prohibit yakking, texting, etc., etc. that would interfere with concentrating on why they were there; singing, rehearsing, learning and interacting together.
The chorister’s cell would be available to them in the event of an emergency or homesickness, however, they would be encouraged to speak and interact with their dorm counselor/proctor and peers first as part of their personal growth experience.
Also, please know that phone numbers of proctors, counselors, the course manager, myself (the registrar), Salve Regina University and Emmanuel Church, will all be available, if and when contact may be necessary and everyone will be happy to get messages to choristers or parents in the event of an emergency. A mailing address will also be provided as well as with mailing instructions for sending cards, (we encourage this), etc., when the course orientation packets are emailed or mailed. Again though, the whole intent is to give the chorister a growing experience that leads to building their self-esteem and independence as a maturing Christian and human being.
I hope this helps everyone's understanding and I would be very happy to talk with any parent personally to help clarify the greater goals and benefits of attending an RSCM summer course. I found the experience in Wilkes-Barre absolutely exhilerating!
