Welcome to Emmanuel Church
Welcome to the Emmanuel Church web site. We have designed this
site with two audiences in mind: those who seek a spiritual home and
those who already are members of Emmanuel Church.
First, those who seek a spiritual home. Finding a community of people
with whom you can travel the spiritual journey can be a daunting task.
Churches can be difficult places to “penetrate.” You walk
in on a typical Sunday morning hoping to “check us out”
and you find people who know each other and are comfortable with the
way things are. It can be intimidating to begin conversations, get
to know people, introduce yourself to the rector and so on. We hope
that you will find us to be warm, friendly people who are eager to
get to know you.
The web site will help you to get to know about Emmanuel Church, its
people, and its programs. If we have done our job, you will see from
this site that Emmanuel is comprised of people who are passionate
about traveling the spiritual path together. Our interests are diverse,
but our areas of focus include worship and music, children’s
ministry, adult Christian formation, and outreach. We also have a
strong attachment to our beautiful building, which was built in 1902
and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
A note about language. As I write the content for this web site, I
am struck repeatedly by the barrier that language often creates. Like
any institution, the church has its own code or insider language that
may seem very strange and confusing, even nonsensical, to the uninitiated.
I have tried to write in a style and using language that is accessible
to all but may have failed in some instances. So, please let me know
if you read words that seem overly "churchy" or phrases
that just don't seem to make sense. My goal is to communicate with
you. Please help me to do so.
Second, those who are members of Emmanuel Church. On this site, you
will find useful information about ministry opportunities and upcoming
events. Obviously there is much more on the site so please browse
at your leisure.
If you have questions about Emmanuel Church or suggestions for the
web site, please email me at rector@emmanuelnewport.org.
Thank you.
